Why frequency matters: power system frequency is a real-time electrical indicator of the balance between generation and demand in an electric power system. As power systems transition towards higher levels of renewable and low-emission energy resources, they must manage increasing operational complexity, mainly driven by the intermittent generation profile of renewable energy sources and the reduced mechanical inertia associated with inverter-based generation. For this reason, frequency monitoring becomes increasingly important to understand how reliably and resiliently the energy transition of the power system is being delivered.
Frequency control is used to continuously correct the balance between power generation and demand by increasing or reducing active power from generators, battery energy storage systems, inverter-based resources and controllable demand. A frequency maintained within normal operating limits indicates that the power system is preserving operational security while integrating changing generation technologies.
Large or sustained frequency deviations may indicate disturbances, insufficient reserves, rapid changes in demand or renewable generation, as well as reduced system strength and resilience. Monitoring frequency provides a practical way to observe how the electricity system performs during the transition towards a cleaner, lower-emission and more renewable energy future.
The platform provides real-time monitoring of grid frequency, graphical visualisation of frequency behaviour over the last 15 minutes and the last hour, daily data download capability, and event-based data downloads when frequency moves outside the normal operating band. Together, these tools support transparent observation of grid frequency and power balance behaviour during the electrical grid’s energy transition.
