Frequency Observatory is an independent technical and educational platform created to monitor, visualise and explain power system frequency using real measurement data.

Project objective: to make power system frequency behaviour visible, accessible and easier to understand for engineers, students, energy-sector professionals and anyone interested in modern electricity systems.

What is Frequency Observatory?

Frequency Observatory is a live monitoring and technical education portal focused on power system frequency. The platform displays measured frequency data and provides educational resources to help visitors understand how electricity systems maintain balance, stability and security.

The project combines real-time data acquisition, cloud-based data storage, web visualisation and technical articles about frequency regulation, power system operation, renewable integration, inverter-based resources and the energy transition.

Why frequency matters

Power system frequency is one of the clearest indicators of the real-time balance between electricity generation and electricity demand.

Frequency tends to rise.

Monitoring frequency helps illustrate how the system responds to changes in demand, generation, contingencies, renewable variability, storage operation and frequency control actions.

What data is displayed?

The live dashboard displays frequency measurements captured from an independent monitoring point. The data is collected through a power quality meter, converted through an industrial communication gateway, processed by a Raspberry Pi data acquisition system and stored in a cloud time-series database.
